Notice Board
Savunese residing outside of the
Savu Islands update friends and relatives on the
islands and elsewhere by radiogramming their
news. The radiogram is an important part of
Savunese tradition, keeping friends and relatives
up-to-date on family matters. It is an expeditious option
to relay information, when there is no telephone
or internet service available.
Savunese radiogram messages typically concern
life's major events, such as the birth of a child
or the passing of a loved one (the so-called
family's message - a grief message). Radiograms
are also used to alert family when someone is
returning home, so they can be collected at the
harbour. Listeners are usually asked to pass the
message on. Such messages also inform people when
they can board a ferry, since schedules are not
always reliable.
The notice board serves the same function as the
radiogram by passing on family messages. Any
Savunese (or anyone related in some way to
Savunese) wishing to post a message on the notice
board can submit their message via the form
below. The sender needs to include their name and
address and the name and address of the people to
whom the message is addressed. See below for
examples of radiogram-style messages.
Too avoid misuse, anyone posting a message must
provide their contact details, which will not be
released or used for any purpose other than
verification. However, we cannot take
responsibility for any inaccuracies or false
information contained in any messages appearing
on the notice board. Messages may be edited for
clarity and are published in good faith.
